The use of the TEG® system for assessing early extubation was illustrated by Dr. Tameshwar Ammar where he states that "excessive bleeding may limit early extubation because these patient[s] may be hemodynamically unstable and may require surgical re-exploration to determine the nature of the bleeding. In addition, excessive bleeding may lead to a prolongation of the length of stay in the intensive care setting and this will defeat the economical goal of early extubation." According to Dr. Ammar, TEG® analysis performed intraoperatively can identify the cause of bleeding and can guide therapy, which would result in reduced bleeding in the postoperative period and thus facilitate early extubation and a shorter stay in the ICU.
